The 2009 Plascon Prism Awards
The 2009 Plascon Prism Awards focused on Green Design and the endless cycle of regeneration and renewal. Using the transience of nature, students had to look to the natural world for inspiration and create an object, environment or service while keeping ecological sustainability in mind. The aim was to stop the use of non-renewable resources and minimise environmental impact with clever design that reintroduced people to the wonders of the natural world.
The Plascon 2009 Colour Forecast mimicked the natural world, bringing its natural life-giving energy into the spaces we inhabit. The palette included fruity colours, deep neutrals, determined darks and tender translucents.
The 2009 Plascon Prism Awards Winner
21-year-old Chacey Eder, a final year Interior Design student at Inscape Design College in Houghton, was announced as the 2009 Plascon Prism Awards winner. Her design, the Baobab Raincatcher, uses an African icon – the baobab tree – made from recycled plastic and painted in the Plascon 2009 Colour Forecast. The tree is designed to act as a filtration system to harness the power of rain, creating a renewable water source that can be placed at lodges, beachfronts, informal settlements, playgrounds, parks and on nature trails.
